  • burn studios has revealed plans for its 2013 Residency, a competition that offers DJs a chance to play in Ibiza. The competition, which is open to DJs around the world, calls on entrants to submit a mix. Judges will pick 15 finalists, who will be flown to Ibiza on May 21st for an "intensive bootcamp" at the International Music Summit that features tutoring from established DJs including Maceo Plex, Solomun and Steve Lawler. Three winners will then be selected, with the main prize a summer residency at Ibiza clubs like Sankeys and Cafe Mambo. Entries will be accepted from January 28th through March 18th, and you can enter by submitting your mix to Mixcloud here. For an idea of what to expect see the below video.
We caught up with burn marketing manager Erik Hofstaedter to discuss this year's programme:
How will this year's burn studios residency build on what was achieved in 2012? Last year we were able to create a huge success in the electronic music industry and in Ibiza people followed the journey of 11 young and talented DJs and saw how they progressed. This year nearly 20 countries from across the globe will participate and thus provide an even bigger audience to up-and-coming entrants. We are there to support and add to culture, and this is what we will continue to do in 2013. Moreover, since there will also be local talents from Japan or Brazil the inter-cultural aspect of burn studios residency gets more important and pushing your boundaries will be even more essential than last year. In the end, three of our finalists will have the chance to make their first steps in the industry, when they will play for the whole summer as residents in great clubs in one of the most important places for electronic music in the world: Ibiza. What tips have you got for people planning to enter? It's the same for every kind of art—you have to stay true to yourself to achieve your goals. We are looking for new talent that we can showcase and therefore unique style is very important. burn studios residency is not a talent show where we want to find rip-offs of what's already out there. Be creative, be passionate, be yourself and go for it. What criteria did you use to pick this year's group of mentors? We always try to find a good mix of people. On the one hand we bring DJs that just had their international breakthrough and can therefore empathize more with the local talent. On the other hand we are bringing very established talent into the program. This way we make sure our contestants learn how to become one of the best DJs on a technical level, but also how the industry works and how they can further pursue their careers. Can you outline some of the wider benefits of this competition, aside from the club residency? We have a Europe-wide network with music managers working for us in every country. This year we will create a tour through the most important festivals for electronic music, where the participants of burn studios residency will get the chance to play in other countries to huge crowds. Having a residency is just the starting point of the support we are providing to the people. For example, last year's residents had the chance to play in Sankeys, Manchester or at various Café Mambo parties in London, just a month after the residency was over.
