- The Love Of Life Orchestra member is next up in the New York label's collaborative series.
The tenth instalment in RVNG's FRKWYS series comes from David Van Tieghem.
The percussionist and sound designer has previously collaborated with some of the New York avant-garde's finest—including Laurie Anderson and David Byrne—and he was also a member of Peter Gordon's Love Of Life Orchestra.
The Fits & Starts project saw ten younger experimental artists help Van Tieghem post various unconventional percussive instruments (including broken toasters, firecrackers, planks of wood, thunder drums and customised electronics) to a bulletin board, as part of the Venus Over Manhattan exhibition in 2012 at New York's White Columns gallery. Van Tieghem played these live at the exhibition, before returning on his own to use them again—and this time the results were recorded.
"These recordings were then presented to the ten contributing musicians for further translation, remix and interpretation," a RVNG press release explains. "For the final sequence, the unique pieces were delivered to Van Tieghem to edit and embellish as the sound collages presented across two album length sides."
The collaboration-focused FRKWYS series is based around experienced musicians teaming up with newer artists, and has previously featured the likes of Laurel Halo, Daniel Lopatin, Carter Tutti, Juan Atkins, Julianna Barwick and JG Thirwell. The most recent instalment saw Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras team up with reggae icons The Congas. Fits & Starts is being billed at the tenth volume, though in truth it's the ninth (there was no Vol. 1).
