  • Deadboy has a new EP for Local Action on the way. White Magick comes in the midst of renewed activity for Deadboy. Last year's Return on Numbers was followed in February with "It Did Not Feel Right," a single on Crazylegs, and now he's moving over to Tom Lea's Local Action for his first record on the label. A few of White Magick's tracks were first previewed in a mix for Truants last year. The six-tracker sees Deadboy adopting a more laid-back and less club-focused approach to production. We spoke with him via e-mail to discuss the record and its inspirations.
Your Truants mix in late 2014 hinted at a treasure trove of new material after a few years where you released relatively few tracks. Did something in particular inspire you last year? I'm constantly making music, just very few people will hear most of it. Last year I decided to let a lot more of it go and send it out to different people and put it in mixes and stuff, which is how the Local Action and Crazylegs releases came together. I just relaxed a bit about what I shared with people really. The new EP seems to hint at a move away from straight-up club music into more melodic, song-based territory. What drove you in that direction? It just happened really, I didn't want to consider it too much. I wanted to make a record that was about enjoying the process and not trying to come up with a club commodity or a tool for DJs. I am working on club edits of these for my sets but I didn't care about who was going to listen to this after it was made or in what context or if anyone would like it or not. I was able to make the record I wanted to, and create a small story and an environment out of sound that means something to me. Some of the brighter sounds and melodies on the EP might be compared to PC Music—has their music had an effect on you at all? No. I do like a lot of that stuff but PC Music did not come from nowhere [or] out of some vacuum, they are a byproduct of culture like everything else. It's easy to see lots of people making more colourful melodic music and look at the success of something like PC Music and connect the two but the bigger picture is that the world and a lot of music is very dark and heavy right now. It's no coincidence that some people want colour and melody in their lives and in the club.
