Ubiquity Records sublabel Luv N' Haight will release a Gloria Ann Taylor collection called Love Is A Hurtin' Thing on November 27th.
The West Virginia-born Taylor learned to sing in church while growing up in Toledo, OH, and was "discovered" by James Brown's close associate Walter Whisenhunt. The two married in 1970 and collaborated extensively. After she signed to Columbia sublabel CBS and received a Grammy nomination, Whisenhunt became frustrated with the major label system and convinced Taylor to help him start a Californian independent label called Selector Sound to release her music. This ended up being a dire career move, and Taylor, disenchanted with the music business, moved back to Ohio after the dissolution of their marriage. However, Selector Sound managed to release eight of her singles in the early '70s, including the three-track Deep Inside You.
That record's strange mix of psychedelic guitars, Taylor's soulful vocals, and an odd drum effect sending the kick out of phase has made the 12-inch a choice rarity among soul and disco heads—the original has gone for over 1,000 dollars on Discogs. "Love Is A Hurting Thing" factors into sets by tastemakers such as DJ Harvey and Floating Points, who dropped the track at both his first You're A Melody night at Plastic People as well as the venue's closing party, where he played a six-hour set with Four Tet. A single featuring the 7-inch version of "Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing" will precede the full collection, which will come as a vinyl set with detailed liner notes.
