Certain Creatures readies debut album, Vipassanā

- Vipassana, Certain Creatures' first album, will land on Styles Upon Styles late next month. Certain Creatures is the alias of Oliver Chapoy, a Brooklyn-based musician whose career stretches back to the '90s. He's been in a handful of different bands and projects (like Shai Hulud and Warm Ghost), and contributed in the studio to a handful of others. He first appeared with productions as Certain Creatures in late 2013 with the tense, abstract techno of Sparkle / Bosch, a two-tracker on Styles Upon Styles' Bangers & Ash series. That one featured vocals from longtime leftfield artist Stuart Argabright, who would recruit Chapoy to co-produce his Black Rain LP Dark Pool, released last year on Blackest Ever Black. (Early 2014 would also see "Sparkle" get remixed by Samuel Kerridge and Jahiliyya Fields.) The next big move for Chapoy is Vipassana, his own Certain Creatures full-length. The album's name is a Buddhist term referring to insight gained through meditation focused on the body. A press release for Vipassana promises "a spectrum of expression, from ferocity and indifference to love and transcendence," delivered through a mix of "power electronics, techno and darkwave pop," as Chapoy "wrestles with the three marks of existence—impermanence, suffering and realisation of the non-self." A few other artists were involved in making the album: Paul Corley, who's done studio work for records from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Ben Frost and Tim Hecker, gets a mixing credit, and fellow Brooklyn locals ShadowBox and Jon Philpot each feature on a track. It'll come on double-vinyl and digital formats. Vipassana drops on Friday, October 30th, and in Brooklyn that night, on the eve of Halloween, Chapoy will play a Certain Creatures live set at a Mysteries Of The Deep party.
