  • Metro and Smart Bar in Chicago are throwing a building-wide bash in support of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation on Sunday, January 17th. A house music legend, Frankie Knuckles had a close connection with Smart Bar and owner Joe Shanahan—he was a resident, and one of the first DJs to play the club when it opened all the way back in 1982. After Knuckles' passing nearly two years ago, Shanahan played a key role in helping establish the nonprofit foundation, which is "dedicated to the advancement of Frankie Knuckles' mission as the global ambassador of house music." Continuing an annual tradition of celebrating Knuckles' birthday (January 18th), proceeds from the party will be donated to the foundation. The lineup, a mix of friends and residents (or both), will hit the decks upstairs in Metro and down in Smart Bar, with doors opening at 9 PM. David Morales, Louie Vega and Terry Hunter will DJ, with live performances from singers Rochelle Fleming and Adeva. Residents Derrick Carter, Michael Serafini and Garrett David round out the night's lineup. You can tune into one of Knuckles' classic tracks, "The Whistle Song," below.
