- Unlicensed mixes and remixes will now be appearing on Spotify.
Spotify and Dubset have reached an agreement allowing unlicensed mixes and remixes to be hosted on the streaming site.
There have been many reported cases of SoundCloud, which has recently sold equity to major labels like Sony and UMG, taking down unlicensed material. Dubset has attempted to create an alternative, making deals with Apple Music and now Spotify. Dubset uses a piece of technology called MixBank to identify rights-holders in a mix who are then paid royalties. Speaking to Music Business Worldwide, Dubset CEO Stephen White said the Spotify deal will "create a brand new revenue stream for the artists whose recordings are sampled and the DJs who create the mixes and remixes. Our technology platform makes it possible for us to identify and pay rights holders in DJ mixes, making this enormously popular music genre available on the world's most popular streaming service for the very first time."
A spokesperson for SoundCloud has since issued this statement: "The story has no truth to it. At SoundCloud, we're on a mission to create a place where all creativity can live. SoundCloud's creator community, including DJs, is incredibly important to us. We have no plans to start proactively removing all mixes."
