James Murphy will bring his Subway Symphony to a new underground park being built in Lower Manhattan.
The project was initially designed for—and rejected by—the New York subway system. It involves musical turnstiles that play tones as users pass through them. Now sponsored by Heineken, Subway Symphony is slated to be installed in the new 70-million-dollar Lowline project, which developers are calling "the world's first underground park."
The development—which is projected to drastically raise nearby property values and tax revenues—stretches for three blocks below Delancey Street near the Williamsburg Bridge in the Lower East Side. The solar-powered subterranean part of the park is slated to open around 2020, though its above-ground component, the Lowline Lab, is open to the public now.
