Jace Clayton (AKA DJ Rupture)'s first book, Uproot: Travels In Twenty-First-Century Music And Digital Culture, came out this week via FSG Originals.
The respected DJ, journalist and experimental composer has taken a break from live gigs in the last couple years to focus on his book. Uproot threads together many of Clayton's magazine articles as well as posts from his long-running blog Negrophonic. Over the course of ten chapters, Clayton travels from Morocco to Mexico, Beirut, Spain and Egypt, meeting key figures in the regions' emerging electronic music movements. He describes the impact that new technologies and networks have had on these regional music cultures.
"Just as the music world made its fitful, uncertain transition from analog to digital, Clayton found himself on the front lines of the creative upheavals of art production in the twenty-first-century globalized world," the publisher writes. "Uproot is a guided tour of this newly opened cultural space, mapped with both his own experiences and his relationships with other industry game changers such as M.I.A. and BitTorrent."
