Liverpool venue 24 Kitchen Street under threat from nearby property developments

- Liverpool music and arts venue 24 Kitchen Street is currently pleading with local planners to stop the building of 200 flats nearby. According to Liverpool Echo, 24 Kitchen Street is under threat from Isle Of Man-based developers Songbird LTD, who want to erect two apartment blocks on the land between Blundell Street, Kitchen Street and Simpson Street in the city's bustling Baltic Triangle. The scheme, which will go before planners on Tuesday, December 20th, has faced heavy criticism from the venue team. The main issue, director Ioan Roberts told RA, is that "we don't think they've adequately factored in the noise generated by our legal permitted use as a live events space and club." 24 Kitchen Street, which has an outdoor courtyard and a 4 AM license, wants to avoid a situation in which future tenants complain about the noise, potentially triggering a process that ultimately impacts on the venue's business. "We want the developers to put in place the provisions to mitigate against potential complaints down the line, by acoustically insulating the flats to the necessary level," continued Roberts. As it stands, though, it's not looking good. Apparently, planners are recommending Tuesday's planning committee to approve the scheme. "The Interim Head Of Planning is satisfied that the proposed use would not unduly affect the operation of 24 Kitchen Street or other nearby entertainment uses," reads the report. As well as exhibitions, poetry recitals and live art performances, 24 Street Kitchen hosts regular club nights, which have recently featured acts like Pender Street Steppers, Objekt and Nightmares On Wax.
