A new compilation called Lives Through Magic will raise money for relief efforts after last month's warehouse party fire in Oakland.
The set was put together by Kris Petersen, the New York-based former label manager of DFA, and the title was taken from a Keith Haring quote about drawing. It comes out on January 30th and features producers from across the American DIY dance music spectrum (and beyond), including Oakland's Bookworms, Canadian artist D. Tiffany, Gavin Russom under his Black Meteoric Star alias, Optimo's JD Twitch, Patricia and Gobby, among many others. Daphni and Owen Pallet collaborate on "Julia" (the compilation's only previously released track), while a new song from Róisín Murphy and a Shinedoe remix of Pantha Du Prince are bonus tracks exclusive to the cassette edition.
All proceeds will be split evenly between The Gray Area Foundation For The Arts (which has set up a relief fund after the fire) and the Trans Assistance Project, which helps trans people reach resources.
"This compilation has been birthed due to a tragic event, but I do not want the compilation to be a souvenir of a tragedy," Petersen says. "I am instead aiming for a positive document of the beauty that exists in the minds, bodies, and spirits of our small, but global community. Many of the folks contributing have all played in, lived in, and truly loved DIY spaces like Ghost Ship."
The fire at Oakland venue Ghost Ship broke out during a 100% Silk event in early December, claiming 36 lives and triggering increased scrutiny on DIY and underground spaces.
