  • Bitwig Studio 2 is on the way. Originally released in 2014, Bitwig emerged as a new contender in the DAW market dominated by the likes of Ableton, Logic and Pro Tools. An updated version is due for release on February 28th. It seeks to develop a "fully modular device architecture" in which internal and third party effects and instruments can be connected in complex chains. 24 new modulators are included for this purpose, including standard envelopes and LFOs in addition to new tools like Random, Select-4 and Math. Bitwig's internal instruments also allow modulators to be used in a polyphonic mode, enabling modulation on a per voice basis, which Bitwig claims has only "previously been seen in closed systems." New devices are included, too, such as Spectrum Analyser, Note Harmoniser, Pitch Shifter, Phaser and a ring modulator called Treemonster, while syncing has been improved along with a host of tools designed to integrate with a range of external hardware, including CV control. Additionally, crossfades and fades can now be written into audio clips, rather than just in the arranger timeline, and the VST3 format is supported. Owners of Bitwig Studio 1 can update to the new version for €159 while new purchasers can expect to pay around €379. Anyone who purchased Bitwig Studio 1 on or after December 10th will get the update for free. Watch a promo video for Bitwig Studio 2.
