  • Apple has updated two of its music-making platforms, Logic and GarageBand for iOS. Logic Pro X 10.3 will include a more legible interface and support for the new touch bar found on the latest version of the MacBook Pro. With the touch bar, users will be able to navigate the timeline and control volume and other parameters on individual tracks, as well as functioning as a keyboard or set of drum pads. Another new feature called Track Alternatives is designed for easily auditioning different regions or edits of a track as well as different combinations of native or third-party plug-ins in any given segment. The summing engine is now 64-bit and can handle up to 192 busses and true stereo panning. Tracks can now be added to a Logic project via a new GarageBand-compatible format that saves to iCloud, meaning changes made to a track on iPhone or iPad are automatically updated in the original project. CDM also points out that software instruments can be set as sidechain sources and fades can be applied to multiple regions at the same time. GarageBand 2.2 for iOS now hosts Alchemy, a softsynth found in Logic. Muli-take recording streamlines the process of capturing multiple takes, while the Audio Recorder tool provides pitch-correction and effects like distortion and delay. A graphic EQ is now included along with access to third-party plug-ins. Logic Pro X 10.3 and GarageBand 2.2 for iOS are available now for $199.99 and $4.99 respectively. Existing users can download the updates free of charge.
