  • 17853 Records will reissue Hiroshi Yoshimura's Pier & Loft on September 20th. Pier & Loft was originally released in 1983. Its seven tracks were recorded for a fashion show that took place in the Tokyo Bay area. The tape originally came out on Fukusei Gijutsu Kohbo, an imprint run by Yoshio Ojima, who produced the album. It has since become a cult classic among ambient fans—Huerco S. cited the LP as a major inspiration on last year's For Those Of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) LP, which ranked highly in RA's albums poll. Pier & Loft is the third record on Japanese digger Chee Shimizu's archival imprint, 17853. The press release includes some thoughts on the record from Yoshimura, who passed away in 2003. "As the time goes by, the Loft was swept away (forgotten) from the City but it somewhat has a look of a 'City of Ruins' that reminds you of something you have forgotten," Yoshimura said. "Something nostalgic. Sounds from the City and the vast landscape gave me a great opportunity to take a fresh look at Tokyo." Listen to clips from Pier & Loft.
