  • London-based reissue label Be With will put out a rare album from Arthur Russell's '80s band The Necessaries. The LP came out on Sire in 1982 and features a cast of New York musicians, including Ernie Brooks (of The Modern Lovers), Jesse Chamberlain, Ed Tomney and Russell, who split songwriting duties, played keys and contributed cello and backing vocals. Russell wrote Event Horizon's most enduring songs, including "More Real," "Driving And Talking At The Same Time," "Detroit Tonight," "On The Run" and "The Finish Line." A number of Downtown dance figures also factored into the LP—influential producer Bob Blank was behind the board while Peter Zummo, whose 1985 debut Zummo With An X was reissued by Optimo Music, plays trombone on "Sahara." Russell would quit the band abruptly to focus on his solo career, jumping out of the van before the mouth of the Holland Tunnel on the way to an important gig. Be With's version has been remastered and comes with extensive liner notes by Mikey IQ Jones. Listen to "Driving And Talking At The Same Time."
