Next up on Awesome Tapes From Africa is an album from Professor Rhythm, real name Thami Mdluli.
Bafana Bafana originally came out in the mid-'90s when house music and kwaito were more or less interchangeable terms, the label says. Mdluli recorded the album, which he describes as "club music with a township style," at a time when kwaito was just starting to dominate in nightclubs and radio charts across the country. The album was made with a Roland MC-500 sequencer, a Yamaha DX7, a Juno 60 and Korg M1 keyboards.
"Lyrically, kwaito championed the local township lingo while adapting 'international music,' house music, into the local context," the label writes. "South Africans made it their own. Today, the largest part of the music industry is occupied by house music and its relatives."
Prior to his Professor Rhythm project, Mduli was a member of chart-topping groups Taboo and CJB in the '80s, playing a style of music called bubblegum pop.
