  • Mark E. Smith has died at age 60. A statement from the manager of Smith's band, The Fall, said that the British artist died this morning, January 24th, at his home. There's no word on cause of death yet, but the manager said that "a more detailed statement will follow in the next few days." Last year, Smith cancelled The Fall's US tour after suffering from "bizarre and rare medical issues." As the founder, frontman and only consistent member of The Fall over the band's almost 40-year life span, Smith was one of the most important forces in the UK's post-punk scene. Under his leadership, The Fall released over 30 albums and nearly as many live records, encompassing over 60 different members through the band's revolving door lineup. Smith was also noted for his stream of consciousness lyrics, along with his witty and sometimes irascible interviews, onstage banter and stage behaviour. He worked with electronic music artists on and off, including high-profile collaborations with Gorillaz and Mouse On Mars.
