  • Discogs has shared its 2017 year-end report. The online record hub appears to be as strong as ever, with continued growth across the board in 2017. The site says just over ten million total units were sold last year, versus around 8.3 million sold in 2016—a 20.4% increase. Vinyl, as usual, is the most popular format, with nearly 7.5 million units sold, but the medium that experienced the most growth was the cassette tape. Sales for the format rose from around 126,000 in 2016 to 163,000 last year, a roughly 29.5% increase. Sales of electronic releases saw the slowest growth, at just under 3%. However, for electronic and experimental heads, there are a few notable titles on the "Top New Album Sales" list: Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass grabbed the #2 spot, the Young Marco-curated compilation, Welcome To Paradise Vol. II: Italian Dream House 89-93, came in at #4 and The Other People Place's Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café ranked #9. (A deluxe edition of Radiohead's OK Computer was #1.) Discogs' user-built database, meanwhile, grew around 4.2% last year, with the addition of more than 1.3 million releases. All told, Discogs' database has more than 9.5 million releases, and there are nearly 39 million items for sale at its marketplace. Read the annual report at the Discogs blog.
