A compilation of unheard material from Mitar Subotic's Rex Ilusivii alias, Selected Works, is on the way via Versatile Records.
Versatile boss Gilb'R says he was introduced to the late Serbian artist, also known as Suba, through Vladimir Ivkovic, whose Offen Music label has put out three Subotic releases (including two compilations) in recent years. It ended up taking more than two years to pick out tracks for the upcoming vinyl double-pack, which is scheduled for release in May.
Subotic's recordings mix pop, folk and rock forms with a hefty amount of experimental electronics. He died in 1999 at age 38, succumbing to smoke inhalation after a fire struck his São Paulo studio.
"Being submerged in such a unique universe, so singular, brought me happiness," Gilb'R says of the producer's music. "It also filled me with hope, because I tell myself that today there must be many other outstanding musicians who produce in the shadow of the traditional circuit, just for the pleasure of making music."
