Joakim will release a new experimental album called The Studio Venezia Sessions via The Vinyl Factory on June 8th.
For his latest full-length, the New York-based producer was invited to record at Xavier Veilhan's Studio Venezia, an installation, sculpture and recording studio which stood at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Brian Eno and Sebastien Tellier were among the other artists who took place in the project over a six-month period. Visiting musicians were given access to Nigel Godrich's mobile studio, an assemblage of vintage recording gear and synths.
Joakim (full name Joakim Bouaziz) studied the extensive gear list and decided to record pieces "in situ" using feedback from visitors to the pavilion. "Joakim asked random visitors of the pavilion to pick a word, a letter (between A and G), tap a tempo and sometimes choose the instruments that he would play for each piece," the press release explains.
He then took the recordings—which feature the Ondes Marthenot, Buchla Music Easel and Baschet Cristal, among other synths—back to his Crowdspacer studio in New York for light edits and mixing. The resulting album is influenced by legendary German kosmische band Cluster. Each track includes the name and origin of each collaborating visitor.
