  • The Glasgow School Of Art has been hit with another fire. The fire started late last night at the Mackintosh building, according to the BBC. The Scottish Fire And Rescue Service said it was first alerted to the fire at 11:19 PM on Friday, June 15th. More than 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines were sent to the scene at the Mackintosh building, and the fire quickly spread to neighbouring facilities, including the O2 ABC Glasgow. Sources have told Resident Advisor that the club on campus, The Art School, was not damaged, though last night's event was cancelled. In a statement published Sunday, the Glasgow School Of Art said all its buildings would be closed for the next week. SFRS Deputy Chief Officer Iain Bushell said the fire caused "extensive damage" and that containing the massive fire would be a "prolonged incident." "It's a tragedy that such an important building to the people of Glasgow has been damaged again," he told the Guardian. SFRS reported no casualties and said all nearby buildings were evacuated.
Four years ago, the same building caught fire and destroyed much of the university's library. The building has been undergoing renovations that cost up to £35 million and was expected to open again next year. SFRS Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Peter Heath said it's "likely that all the restoration work carried out since the last fire has been destroyed," according to the BBC's Aileen Clarke. This destruction to the beloved building spurred many to share their memories of the campus.
