- The non-profit wants to expand opportunities for female and gender-nonconforming music professionals with EQL Directory.
Spotify and SoundGirls have announced a global networking database called EQL Directory.
The initiative aims to bring gender parity to the music industry at a time when less than five percent of all audio professionals are estimated to be women. The free online database is a place to showcase work and build connections and serves as a tool for those looking to hire. By spotlighting women and gender-nonconforming people, EQL Directory sets out to eliminate the excuse: "We want to hire a woman, but we couldn't find one."
The project builds off of work from SoundGirls, a non-profit founded in 2013 by Michelle Sabolchick Pettinato and Pearl Jam sound engineer Karrie Keyes. "SoundGirls already had this global directory of women in audio and production," says Spotify. "We came together to help them make it more beautiful, more useful and more visible within the industry."
