  • It's not every day that a DJ drops in for a book reading and a show, but DJ Spooky is not your usual DJ. Paul Miller is a conceptual artist, writer, DJ and musician working in New York City. He has recorded a huge volume of music as "DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid" and collaborated with DJ Shadow, Sonic Youth, Kool Keith a.k.a. Doctor Octagon, Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan, Yoko Ono, Anti-Pop Consortium, Amon Tobin, Mad Professor,Lee Scratch Perry and more, gaining praise and respect for DJ Spooky as one of the worlds purveyors of music innovation. DJ Spooky's tour promotes his new mix record "Celestial Mechanix" out now on Thirsty Ear, and his book (with companion CD) “Rhythm Science”, which is Paul’s first collection of essays, published by MIT Press in April 2004. Paul's multimedia show DJ Spooky's "Rebirth of A Nation" is currently playing all around the world, including Sydney. The show is based upon D.W. Griffith's 1915 film "Birth of a Nation", an enduring albeit totally racist epic tale of an America that, in essence, never existed. The film is utilised by the Ku Klux Klan as a recruitment tool and considered to be an American "cinema classic" despite the racist content. In Melbourne Paul Miller is making two appearances, doing a reading of “Rhythm Science” at Readings bookstore on Lygon St, Carlton at 6.30pm on 3 February, and a DJ set at HiFi Bar on 4 February. At the Hi Fi Bar gig, DJ Spooky will be supported by DJ J-Red and the 2 Dogs (The Resin Dogs). On this trip to Australia, DJ Spooky brings with him a mixed up selection of broken-beat hip hop, experimental electronic jazz and more from the 40 thousand odd records in his collection. Tickets $29 and are available online at www.thehifi.com.au, Polyester Records and Central Station Records.
