  • Creamfields 2006 showcases house, electro, progressive, trance, breaks, hard dance and drum'n'bass DJs. But hang on chaps, isn't there something missing?
  • Creamfields thumbs its nose at techno image
  • Back in the mid-to-late nineties the nightclub Cream in Liverpool turned thousands of young Britons onto the underground dance music scene. It also spawned Creamfields, one of the first festivals to showcase electronic dance music. As Creamfields UK 2006 rolls around for its ninth edition, it surprises RA that this year's line-up is distinctly lacking in techno. In the past, Richie Hawtin, Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills have flown the flag at the festival but barring Green Velvet, this year there is a notable absence of big guns, or even little ones, for fans of buzzes and beeps. Perhaps the Creamfields organisers blew their budget snaffling Top of the Pops sensation Gnarls Barkley, who will appear alongside electro pop darlings Goldfrapp and The Prodigy on the Main Stage. Despite the lack of respect to Detroit, year-in year-out Creamfield regulars will still have plenty to crow about: Oakenfold, Van Dyk, Corsten, Tiesto, van Buuren and Halliwell line up in the Cream/Goodgreef arena; Erick Morillo brings together his label talent in the Subliminal Sessions tent; Yousef hosts his Circus stage with Hernan Cattaneo, Layo & Bushwacka and Roger Sanchez while the Tidy arena will be mopping up hard dance fans as usual. Swedish house mafia Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell as well as Dave 'Switch' Taylor will all pop their cherry at this year's Creamfields. Other performances to look out for include party electro favourite Tiga, electrohouse kings M.A.N.D.Y, Digitalism and DJ Shadow in the new Scratch Perverts tent. There's also a new arena called The Hacienda & Cream Classics where you can relive the halycon days of both The Hacienda (the birthplace of the summer of love) and Cream via some of the clubs' original DJs including Graeme Park and Jon da Silva, or catch New Order's Peter Hook spinning an exclusive set of New Order hits. Plenty to occupy the dance music massive but we're still a bit gutted about the lack of techno. At least Creamfields can never be accused of jumping the bandwagon! Creamfields UK 2006 takes place at Daresby Estate Liverpool on Saturday August 27th, 2006.
