  • Tired of bouncers and attitude at New York clubs? Check out the BAPLab Festival in Brooklyn this weekend for a sampling of artists on Ghostly, Spectral and M_nus. New York's Bushwick Art Project (BAP) is a collective dedicated to the promotion of electronic music, new media, and digital art. According to organisers, latest venture BAPLab is a "festival of ideas" where they hope artists can explore new paths through a program of electronic music, video, sound installations and interactive works. BAPLab takes place this weekend from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning and features a diverse program that should satisfy both the IDM noodlers and clubbers wanting to take a break from their usual Saturday night superclub routine. Held at 3rd Ward, the festival will feature cerebral offerings like Douglas Henderson's sound installation 'Untitled 2004': a line of four 12" woofers painted to resemble a swimming pool and filled with water. Based on the sonic frequencies, patterns are generated on the surface of the water resulting in "music made to be seen, not heard". OK, not everyone's idea of a big night out but beats waiting in a line for fifty minutes outside Crobar, right? After midnight the festival switches into club mode (minus the table service) with more energetic DJ and live sets from artists including Lusine [Ghostly], Most Wanted RA podcaster Ryan Elliott [Spectral], Ryan Crosson [M_nus/Trapez], Hakan Libdo [Force Tracks] and NYC Robots member Nick AC. The BAPLab festival takes place this weekend at 3rd Ward, Brooklyn in NYC from 4:00 p.m on Saturday July 22 to 6:00 a.m. Sunday, July 23. Entry will only set you back a tenner.
