  • Andy Meecham from Chicken Lips compiles six 12” of seventies analogue obsessions onto CD the latest release from The Emperor Machine. ‘Vertical Tones and Horizontal Noise’ will be released this September. The Emperor Machine project was born out of Meecham’s desire to create a now sound using vintage equipment and seventies production techniques. Think sci-fi films, prog rock, electronic rock, disco, Delia Derbyshire and a heavy Can addiction. The name was chosen randomly from a hat, but the impetus behind the project was far from random: Emperor Machine’s first offering ‘Aimee Tallulah is Hypnotised’ received wide acclaim for its marriage of dusty old technology and noughties finesse. Especially whipped was debut single 'SH3A', which married the 2003 fashion for the schaffel beat with vintage equipment to highly original effect. Meecham followed up ‘Aimee Tallulah’ with series of six 12”s this year, which are now being compiled for the poor and turntable-deprived. The ‘Vertical Tones and Horizontal Noise’ series on vinyl is now up to volumes I to VI, (parts V and VI are currently incubating), but the best tracks are about to be released on CD this September. Meecham in an interview with Dirty magazine on the project: “I really wanted to record something just for myself that sounded like it could of really been a lost album from that dusty analogue era. I just recorded everything badly through a 70s Marshall head or an old tape echo and into a Mac so I could piss about cutting and pasting ideas together and watching the fruits of my labor turn into something... fantastic!” Check out samples from the album at the Emperor Machine’s Myspace Tracklist 01.
