  • October 21, 2006. Radioactivity is a weekly roundup of the best radio shows, podcasts and downloadable sets online. This week the new Black Strobe single, Squarepusher and Mashtronic... *** New Black Strobe single: Dark electro duo Black Strobe aka Ivan Smagghe and Arnaud Rebotini have a new remix album 'Remix Sessions' due out in December. For those who can’t wait, subscribe to the Black Strobe podcast and grab the radio edit of the first single off the album 'Shining Black Star' for free. It’s remixed by Phones aka Paul Epworth, the studio whiz who co-produced The Rapture's latest longplayer ‘Pieces of Love' and also the Bloc Party. Also don't forget to grab the Arnaud Rebotini RA podcast if you haven’t already. Mashtronic: If you like thumping progressive house and banging electrohouse, then you're probably familiar with German-Finnish online collaboration Mashtronic who have emerged as one of the new flagbearers for the prog movement with singles and remixes on Bedrock, Global Underground, Nascent and their own output Mashtronic Records. This week the duo are the guest on the Balance Record Pool show on Proton Radio. The show airs Friday, October 27 at 10:00 p.m. GMT. My oh my: Berlin trio My My have a new album 'Songs for the Gentle' on Playhouse plus a new 12" 'Butterflies and Zebras' on Simple Records. They’re also DJs, and you can listen to a thirty-minute live mix in the mixes section at Simple Records. There are also sets by Phonique, Mike Monday, Spirit Catcher and simple head honcho and RA podcaster Will Saul. What is music for? So what’s it all about then? This year the Radio Lab show on New York public radio did an episode on the science of music. Sound like eggheaded stuff? It’s actually pretty interesting and entertaining: this RA staffer learned, among other esoteric things 1) why more Chinese have perfect pitch than Americans, 2) how if you loop speaking, it turns into singing (actually pretty useful stuff for budding musicians), 3) how mothers saying goochy-goochy-goo at their babies isn’t just nonsense, 4) why Parisian rioted to Stravinsky’s ‘the Rite of Spring’ in 1913 but applauded a year later, and 5) the story of a computer programmer who can inject the flavour of any composer into any piece of music. Take careful notes, test next Monday. Hello Squarepusher: New album 'Hello Everything' from experimental drill'n'bass artist Squarepusher has just come out on Warp and it's being touted as his most accessible yet. Not sure if that's a good thing and want to try before you buy? You can listen to the album in full on BBC's Collective mag page. *** There you have it. If you have any links to fantastic music which you want to share with the world, post them in the forum or send 'em along to [email protected] with the subject line 'Radioactivity'. *** Radioactivity - delivered to your door with the milk every Saturday morning GMT.
