- Rapster will release a collection of the tracks that the Bristol outfit have sampled over the years.
Crate diggers will finally be able to rest easy later this year, as Massive Attack—a group well known for the judicious use of samples in their work—will compile a number of their song sources for the first time on the forthcoming Protected collection.
The sleeve notes on Blue Lines state that Massive Attack's "Daydreaming" was "inspired by Wally Badarou," but if you'd heard Badarou's material beforehand, you'd know that it was a straight-up lift of multiple bars from the intro of his "Mambo" track. The tune opens up Protected, which also features sampled cuts from Isaac Hayes, The Blackbyrds and Lowrell.
In addition to those songs, Protected will also feature some of the tracks that inspired the group's cover versions. John Holt's "Man Next Door" got a going over on Mezzanine, while Blue Lines contained adaptations of Lewin Bones Lock's "Five Man Army Dub" and William De Vaughn's "Be Thankful For What You've Got," and all of those originals appear here.
Protected is the second in this series, following on from 2007's Discovered, which raided Daft Punk's sample cupboard.
