  • Let's Mix! is currently hosting the Next Girl DJ contest, a mixing competition made exclusively for European girls. The contest aims to help more girls break into the world of professional DJing. “I was really shocked to see so few female DJs featured in the annual Top 100 DJ chart in DJ Magazine this year," sayid DJ and Mobilee boss Anja Schneider, who will be sitting as one of competition's judges. "I think there were maybe 2 out of 100?" By boosting their credentials and giving them big gigs around Europe, the contest hopes to put more female jocks on the radar. The gist of the competition is as follows: DJs upload their best mixes in mp3 format, and Let's Mix! publishes them on the contest's homepage. DJs with the best rated mixes will play at parties in London, Brussels, Paris or Berlin, where they'll mix in front of a panel of judges as well as a main room audience. Four finalists will be chosen from there, each of whom will prepare a "beach themed" mix for the final round. The winning DJ will perform at the Roxy Jam in Biarritz, and will be invited to appear on Anja Schneider's radio show. They'll also receive a haul of merchandise from Roxy and audio equipment maker JBL (including, for some reason, a surfboard), as well as a Pacemaker hand-held DJ device. According to Anthea, a British DJ and one of the competition's judges, contestants will come away from Next Girl DJ with some very valuable experience, whether they win or not. "I think this will be a big break for them," she says. "It's great exposure if they haven't had a chance to perform at a high level before–and by that I mean a high profile gig... They will have a greater sense after and during this competition if this is truly the thing want to pursue as their career." The contest has been underway since February, but new mix entries will be accepted until April 16th. Semi-Final events begin next month.
