  • Amidst rumours that the club had gone into administration and could be forced to close, management at fabric have confirmed with Resident Advisor that the venue will be open this weekend. Talk of the London nightclub's demise began Wednesday afternoon, originating on Twitter and quickly spreading to music websites and their message boards. Most of the chatter stemmed from tweets and Facebook updates by Ben Watt, London producer and head of the label Buzzin Fly, whose Twitter account has over 5,000 followers. Claiming he heard the information "from the horse's mouth," Watt said that fabric and matter had both gone into administration and that all of their staff had been sacked. He later deleted these posts and sent out a tweet saying: "i seem to have upset some people revealing news that i thought others knew. it was not my intention. apologies." Earlier today, Watt posted a follow up statement on his Facebook page. Beyond confirming that this weekend's program will go ahead as planned, management at fabric have not commented on any of the rumors specifically, nor have they responded to questions about the club's status overall. The controversy comes just days after the announcement that matter, fabric's sister club in Greenwich, will be closed for the summer. Hampered by a non-central location and consistent transport issues emanating from the city's Jubilee line, the 2,600 capacity venue was a victim of lower than expected turnouts, high operating costs and subsequent financial losses. Though it is unclear exactly how matter's problems will affect fabric, an article from last week in the London Evening Standard reported that Fabric591, the parent company of both clubs, "stands as a guarantor to a £3.2 million loan taken out by Matter[sic]," and that the company "lost £191,000 last year." fabric previously went into administration in 2003, following a legal dispute inherited from the building's previous owners. The incident never caused the venue to close or visibly affected its programming in any way, and founders Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie were able to buy the club back shortly after. Update: On Friday afternoon, management at fabric released the following statement: "The directors of fabric are currently dealing with financial problems due to the result of the Jubilee Line closures at matter. Consequentially, matter will definitely remain closed throughout summer. However, fabric will very much remain open as normal, business as usual."
