  • Rekids boss Matt Edwards, AKA Radio Slave, has teamed up with Japanese toy maker Devilrobots to create No Sleep No Tofu, a Rekids-themed action figure. The new toy follows in the Kubrick tradition, meaning it's a limited edition collector's item with a very simplified human form, ala PLAYMOBIL or LEGO. According to Edwards, the idea has been a long time coming: "Yoshizo from Devilrobots and I have been good friends for some years now and we've always discussed the possibility of making a toy... After we did the 'Koma Koma' [No Sleep Part 6] sleeve I immediately saw the idea of using this as a face for a toy and I approached Devil Robots." Edwards is also something of a toy fanatic himself. "I've been a huge toy collector since I was a kid and I'd always dreamed of making something like this. I'm a collector of the New York artist Kaws and also Japanese Kaiju toys, such as Realxhead. Since moving to Berlin I'm also finding a lot of 60's and 70's East German GDR toys." No Sleep No Tofu is only the latest of Edwards' forays into non-musical products: last month he announced the launch of Pyramids of Mars, a Rekids off-shoot that releases books, films and other collector's items. "As vinyl sales within the music industry are falling and consumers are being pushed away from physical formats, I thought it would be a nice idea to show another side of Rekids," says Edwards. "This will be the start of some very interesting non-musical projects we have planned!" No Sleep No Tofu will be available through the Japanese online shop Beams as of August 21st, and will be stocked at select European stores beginning in September.
