- The One trilogy's next installment is due for release this September.
Matthew Herbert has unveiled details for One Club, the second installment in his One trilogy, due for release next month on his own Accidental imprint.
The new album follows One One, Herbert's singer-songwriter effort from last April. Though One One and One Club are conceptually linked, the methods behind them could hardly be more different: the former was written, recorded and performed entirely by Herbert himself, while the latter consists entirely of sounds made by a crowd at the Robert-Johnson club in Frankfurt.
"My role is challenged since I have not made any of the sounds myself, but offered instructions to the people there and recorded the results that came back at me," says Herbert. "The record is made of their noises, their voices, their bodies and their neighbours."
As we reported back in February, Herbert collected these sounds by placing microphones all around Robert Johnson and recording the audience carrying on for two hours with no music playing. He then melded this source material into harsh, minimalist techno tracks that reflect the more challenging side of his palette, as heard in his One Club performances this summer.
Commenting on the general concept of the album, Herbert says: "The record is intended as a document of one night in one club, a celebration of a typically fragmented, spontaneous community brought together for one night only through the idea of music and dancing. Presumably that group of people will never again be together in one room, but there is now music to be the memory and, hopefully, move the feet."
