- Alex Paterson is ready to release a new album with the former Pink Floyd member on guitar.
Alex Paterson is ready to release a new album as The Orb, featuring guitar by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
Entitled Metallic Spheres, the record is split into two parts: a Metallic Side and a Sphere Side, each of which is made up of five movements. According to a press release, the idea for the record came about when Paterson, Gilmour and past Orb collaborator Martin Glover (AKA Youth) all worked together on a cover of Graham Nash's "Chicago" for a charity project. Paterson and Glover were so happy with the results that they decided to keep working on it until they had an album-length product. However, a recent post on David Gilmour's official blog (not written by Gilmour) claims that the famed guitarist's involvement in the project was limited to just one jam session, at which Paterson wasn't present.
The post reads: "as it turns out and as you can see, the result of that jam session has now been spread across the next Orb album, Metallic Spheres, which will be released as 'The Orb featuring David Gilmour... So there you have it. He was working on an album with The Orb. Sort of.'"
Metallic Spheres will be available in a variety of different formats: double LP, standard CD a double CD featuring one disc recorded in 3D60 Sound, a recording method co-invented by Glover that enhances stereo effects (you can try it out here). The album will also be available via digital download. In true Pink Floyd fashion, a series of laser light shows are being planned for New York and LA surrounding the album's release, though no specific dates have been announced yet.
