- The SND member pays tribute to the speakers that changed his life on a new LP for Editions Mego.
In addition to his recently announced album Multistability, Sheffield-based experimental artist Mark Fell has another full-length set for release in December, entitled UL8.
As with much of his solo work, Fell's new album will be heavily conceptual; this time his subject is the Celestion UL8 speaker. "My older brother bought a pair of these when I was starting comprehensive school, and between his 10cc and Supertramp records I first encountered electronically synthesized sound at high volumes," he says. It was through these speakers that Fell first heard some of the most influential records of his life, from Kraftwerk to Human League to Fad Gadget, and in the meantime developed an obsession with electronic textures. The UL8 remained inspirational to Fell long after these early formative years––in the early '90s, he even dug them out of his attic to use them in sessions with fellow SND member Mat Steel.
"The tracks here replicate the simple monosynth and drum machine equation; and have, to a large extent, been made with and for the UL8," says Fell. The album comprises 19 untitled tracks split into three sections, "The Occultation of 3C 273," "Vortex Studies" and "Acids In The Style of Rian Treanor," plus one titled track at the end called "Death of a Loved One."
