- Now I'm Just A Number collects film scores by New York post-industrial duo Stuart Argabright and Shinichi Shimokawa.
Next month, Blackest Ever Black will release a collection of soundtracks by Black Rain, a '90s production duo formed by the post-punk artist Stuart Argabright, entitled Now I'm Just A Number: Soundtracks 1994-1995.
Argabright made a name for himself in the late '70s and early '80s as the frontman for Ike Yard, a respected New York post-punk outfit. According to a press release, he formed Black Rain years later as an industrial metal band, but over time the group's lineup dwindled down to just Argabright and Shinichi Shimokawa. The duo began making atmospheric electronic music, and in 1995 were commissioned to write the soundtrack for Johnny Mnemomic, a less-than-memorable sci-fi film starring Keanu Reeves. In the end almost all of their music was left out of the final cut. Around that time they also composed a score for an audio book version of William Gibson's Neuromancer. Despite being collected on a 1995 album called 1.0 (now out of print), the compositions for both soundtracks have been mostly forgotten.
On Now I'm Just A Number, Blackest Ever Black compile seven of Black Rain's soundtrack compositions from the mid-'90s, all of which were culled from Argabright's DAT tapes in New York and remastered at Air Studios in London. The album will be available digitally and as an LP.
