- The Leftroom boss will release his debut album in October.
Matt Tolfrey is ready to release his debut album, Word of Mouth.
Two things immediately stand out about the album. The first is that all but two of the tracks feature guest artists. Tolfrey has always had a thing about collaborations—nearly all of his EPs have seen him teaming up with one artist or another—and Word of Mouth is no exception, with the likes of James Teej, Kevin Knapp and Marshall Jefferson all popping in for cameos.
Then there's the production method behind the album. According to a press release, every track began as a melody Tolfrey heard in his head and then sang into a mic. He explains: "I cannot play the piano and I am not professionally trained in any way musically, but through years of DJing I know exactly what I like, and I have great tracks in my head that need to get out. While searching the internet for alternate ideas of making music, I came across some amazing software that enables you to simply sing or hum into a mic, which then translates into midi notes, which you then use as the basis for your tracks... In theory, the album is mainly going to be written with my mouth, not my fingers... hence the name Word of Mouth."
Word of Mouth is due out in October on Tolfrey's label, Leftroom.
