  • Cabaret Voltaire have announced a new retrospective set called #8385 (Collected Works 1983-1985), due out on November 4th. The group, headed up by Richard H. Kirk, was formed in the mid-70s in Sheffield and would later become one of the most important forces in early electronic music. They were signed to Rough Trade for the majority of their lifespan and highly influential across a number of genres, including industrial and post-punk. The set brings together four of the band's mid-80s albums, which saw them move towards more accessible sounds. The Crackdown, Micro-Phonies, Drinking Gasoline and The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord are all included on both vinyl and CD. A disc of 12-inch singles and a selection of outtakes (titled Earthshaker) will accompany the original LPs. For the visually inclined, the box set also comes with two DVDs: Cabaret Voltaire Live offers up two concerts from 1984, while Gasoline In Your Eye dates back to 1985—"an experimental video showcase" of the group's promo videos only available on VHS up till now. There will be a full 40-page booklet, an essay from Phil Barnes and liner notes from frontman Richard H. Kirk as well. #8385 comes through Mute, a label that the band have been working with since 1990. You can hear some clips from the collection here. The press releases also promises another box set for early 2014 called #7885, which will highlight their earlier works. Mute Recorcds will release #8385 (Collected Works 1983-1985) on November 4th, 2013.
