  • DJ Koze is set to head to Australia later this month to play three shows over New Year's. Punctuated by the release of his most recent LP, Amygdala, it's been a fruitful year for the German producer, including an inclusion in the top half of of RA's Top DJs of 2013 poll (not to mention number one in our favourite tracks). We chatted to him via email about what's been happening.
How has 2013 panned out for you since Amygdala was released? Any travel highlights? Koze: Hell no—my life didn't turn out the way I thought it would after releasing Amygdala. Not even close to what I figured I would be doing or be at. I'm so far off what I figured I would be doing, that the distance between the sun and Mars is closer. But that's the beauty of life and you really don't know how things will end up. I've had ups and plenty of downs. I'm happy as hell though. The whole life is a travel highlight. Do you think the album has exposed you to a wider audience? Have you noticed that on tour? Koze: Yes definitely, but not only has the crowd changed as I am in a transition too, especially my brain. On a neurological level success is actually a lot more informative than failure. If you get a reward, the brain remembers what it did right, but with failure (unless there is a clear negative consequence, like the shock a child feels when she sticks something in an electrical outlet) the brain isn't sure what to store, so it doesn't change at all. I really think that music can change me to be a better person. Who's been dominating your record bag lately? Koze: All the new tracks of Pampa Records and those which are waiting in the pipeline. What can crowds here expect from your sets this time around? Koze: To be as perfect as God is impossible to me, but to move toward this perfection eternally and forever is within man’s possibilities with the help of God. And this is the life and my moral position to which I am called. I will try with all my power to create groovy parties in Down Under. What's the plan for the coming year? Koze: My plans for the year include making deeper friendships with others, but especially with myself. I am a mess.
DJ Koze will arrive in Adelaide to play on New Year's Eve at Cuckoo Bar before heading up to Melbourne for Let Them Eat Cake festival on January 1st at Werribee Park where he will play our RA stage alongside James Holden, Julio Bashmore and Dusky. Later that night he jets up to The Ivy in Sydney for Lost Disco which also features Soul Clap and Wolf + Lamb. Tickets to Let Them Eat Cake can be purchased on RA.
