  • Discwoman will host industry insiders for a panel discussion about gender at Red Bull Studios on Saturday, April 4th. The Brooklyn-based collective, which launched last year, sets out to rectify dance music's male-dominated dynamic by putting more women in the DJ booth. They recently returned from a three-stop tour of Puerto Rico, where Bossa Nova residents like Volvox and UMFANG teamed up with local selectors for a series of all-women lineups. "A lot of men don’t want to book female DJs. There’s still a stigma," says founder Frankie Hutchinson in a recent interview with THUMP. In April they will host a panel discussion about dance music's gender gap in partnership with Red Bull Studios and POWRPLNT, a new media art and production studio run by Angelina Dreem. Invited guests include Hutchison herself as well as GHE20G0TH1K's Venus X, Jasmine Solano, Katie Garcia, and THUMP features editor Michelle Lhooq. The talk, which kicks off at 5 PM on April 4th, will be followed by DJ sets from affiliates Abby and Shyboi, plus a special live performance TBA. You can listen to a live set from UMFANG, recorded at the recent Technofeminism party in Brooklyn, below.
