The California label will re-release the duo's second album this August.
As is typical in the Reddit-driven vaporwave scene, little is known about the producers who make up 2814, Hong Kong Express and t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者. The former runs the prolific net label Dream Catalogue and has spoken at length about his belief in vaporwave's durability as a genre. The duo, who respectively live in London and the American midwest, have never met in person, but set out to record vaporwave without using samples, often thought of as a touchstone of the '80s obsessed genre.
Hong Kong Express says "we wanted to make one of the first ever sample-free vaporwave albums, as both a retaliation to lazy vaporwave producers who had become overly reliant on sampling with little thought put into the creation of their music, and also as a backlash to the music media who had painted vaporwave as nothing more than a brief curiosity of 20th century music that had been put to bed." Atarashī Ni~Tsu No Tanjō was originally released in 2014 in a CD-R edition of 50. Adam Harper wrote on vaporwave in his 2014 RA feature on the online underground.
