  • Woo will release Awaawaa via Palto Flats on January 29th. The English group helmed by brothers Mark and Clive Ives has been active for over four decades, but their back catalog has recently gained a level of cult notoriety being compared, variously, to Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Animal Collective, Cluster and Brian Eno. Palto Flats describes the duo's slow migration in style, saying "initially describing themselves as alternative, indie rock, lo-fi jazz, synth and nostalgic acoustic guitar music, the Ives brothers eventually shifted to albums described as ambient, new age, spiritual, angelic, instrumental music for meditation, relaxation and healing." Energized by the renewed interest in their music (which has seen reissues on Chicago indie Drag City as well as Stuart Leath's Emotional Rescue), the Ives' have been diving into their voluminous unheard archives. Awaawaa comprises never-before-heard recordings made in South London between 1975 and 1982. The label says the 15 tracks touch on ambient, electronics, dub and krautrock. The imprint has commissioned a couple of videos in conjunction with the new release, which is a joint effort with New General Catalogue. Last year Palto Flats put out a valuable reissue of Mariah's Utakata No Hibi, a record which came in at number 11 on our albums poll. Watch the Scott Kiernan-directed clip for "Odd Spiral" below.
