New club, Contact, to open in Tokyo

Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Erika and the Giegling crew will play at the Shibuya venue in the coming months.

A new nightclub called Contact is opening in Tokyo.

The Shibuya venue is being run by Global Hearts, the company that previously operated the now-closed Tokyo nightspot Air. Its name was coined by Derrick May, who was a regular guest at Air. The basement club has two rooms—a main area and a smaller bar space—and will employ a no-photography policy on the dance floor.

"We’d like to create a space where everyone can easily come and enjoy the music without any concerns. A place where you forget that you even have a mobile phone to 'take pictures.' There will be a policy for no cameras/video recordings/etc., but we will hire professional photographers. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind the photographers forgetting to take pictures because they get sucked into the music and the environment," says the club's director, Yuko Ichikawa. "There are no resident DJs at the moment. We want Contact to be a venue where young DJs would work hard and be proud to stand inside the DJ booth. A place where the DJs can grow alongside the venue, and eventually call it their 'home.'"

The new club will host its first event on Friday, April 1st, with Function headlining. The rest of the month sees slots for the likes of Francois K and Goth-Trad (April 2nd), Louie Vega and DJ Nori (April 9th), a Dekmantel contingent (April 15th and 16th), John Osborn and Dorisburg (April 22nd), Laurent Garnier (April 23rd) and a Giegling showcase on April 28th. In May, Mister Saturday Night will spin on the 2nd, with nd_baumecker and Efdemin stopping by the following night. Other highlights include Derrick Carter (May 7th), Erika and Ulf Eriksson (May 14th), DJ Nobu and Willie Burns (May 20th), Fumiya Tanaka (May 21st) and a Northern Electronics showcase on May 28th. For full lineup details for April and May, head to the Contact club page on RA.
