  • Ninja Tune has announced details for an album from Space Dimension Controller, called Orange Melamine. The UK producer, real name Jack Hamill, put out his debut album proper, Welcome To Mikrosector-50 on R&S in 2013. (He's also been behind a free digital LP for Acroplane Recordings, from 2009, and a few mini-albums and extended EPs.) But Orange Melamine counts as his first album he made, back in 2008, aged 18 in his bedroom. A press release says old VHS tapes (in particular sci-fi films from the '80s and '90s), and artists like Boards Of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski, were key influences, and the album's title refers to Hamill's memories of living with his grandparents when he was younger. "The orange comes from the '80s-style tiling in their kitchen," says Ninja Tune, "and the melamine from the snake enclosures his grandfather helped build for him." He used a time-consuming process when putting the album together, first recording the individual tracks for each production onto old Pyral cassette tapes at double speed and 200% pitch, then recording those tapes at half speed back into his DAW. "It definitely means a lot to me as it really shows a very specific time in my production and life," Hamill says about Orange Melamine, which is due for release in May. "I feel very nostalgic thinking about the period when I was making it all." Listen to LP cut "Gullfire."
