- Two residents of the San Francisco party Surface Tension are behind the outlet.
A new San Francisco label, called Left Hand Path, is about to launch.
Left Hand Path is run by Nihar Bhatt and Chris Zaldua, two residents and members of the San Francisco experimental techno collective Surface Tension. (Bhatt also plays live under the name Nine, while Zaldua is a music journalist who's done some RA contributing.) Surface Tension have featured the likes of Sandra Electronics, Ancient Methods, Orphx and Talker at their parties since starting in late 2013.
According to the label, "Left Hand Path seeks to represent the aesthetics and atmosphere of the underground culture that has long been an integral part of Bay Area music, and contextualize it amongst the contemporary global musical currents influenced by it."
Left Hand Path's first move is an LP from Cube, AKA Oakland producer Adam Keith (who's also produced as Cubicle). We're told the 13-track album "will appeal to fans of Aussie synth-punks Total Control just as much as it will to fans of Regis, Silent Servant, and their seminal Downwards record label." Up next on the label will be an EP from San Francisco artist C.L.A.W.S.. Records from Toronto's Solvent and three-piece Taiwanese band Forests are in the works for later in the year. Further details for those three releases are still TBA.
To celebrate the launch of Left Hand Path, Surface Tension is throwing an all-night party this Friday at the DIY spot Bay Area 51. Cube and C.L.A.W.S. will play live, and Bhatt, Zaldua and fellow residents Jason Polastri and Justin Anastasi will DJ.
