  • Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith will headline the first in The Getty Center's series of Friday Flights on June 10th. Though she's been working with the Buchla synthesizer for a while now, Smith's third album, EARS, has brought the LA transplant increased attention. We said that one establishes Smith as "a novel, naturalistic and, yes, pop-savvy voice wielding an instrument known for esoteric experimentalism," in our positive review. In addition, RA's Patric Fallon recently took a walk around LA's Griffith Park with Smith for our Breaking Through feature. Up on the hill at The Getty Center, Smith will play outside as part of a multi-disciplinary lineup that includes performances using the "Juicerina," a new, microtonal instrument devised by artists Michael Parker and Wesley Hicks. Chris Kallmyer, a member of the LA contemporary classical collective Wild Up will carry out a piece called "Circles Circling" in the Central Garden, while dancer Kianí Del Valle will ply her craft on the Getty's sprawling concrete courtyards. There's also a series of films inspired by the tram that shuttles visitors up to the architecturally dramatic museum, which boasts one of the best views in LA. Watch the video for Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's "Arthropoda."
