  • Kathexis has just issued Mechanical Marvels: Clockwork Dreams, a new documentary soundtrack from Alex Menzies, AKA Alex Smoke. It's the second original soundtrack the UK producer has made for a BBC4 documentary and released via the Boston-based Kathexis, after last year's Order & Disorder score. Made up of 20 short tracks, this one is based on a film that explores the world of automatons, or self-operating machines—an emphasis has been placed on types of instrumentation used by the automatons, "including bells, chimes and wind organs" and the album uses bits of percussion made from samples of machines in action. Like Order & Disorder, strings and choir play a role as well. Mechanical Marvels: Clockwork Dreams is the second Menzies release in 2016—he appeared as Alex Smoke on R&S with another new experimental vocal album, Love Over Will, back in January. It's also the second full-length of the year for Kathexis, after Sophia Loizou's Singulacra LP. Listen to a few tracks from the soundtrack.
