- After last summer's false start, Town Hall is once again inviting residents and business to air their views on the future of the borough's nightlife scene.
East London's Hackney Council has called a second consultation on its nighttime economy, open until July 17th.
A consultation invites the citizens of a borough to air their views on a pressing local topic during a specific time period, usually via online surveys or drop-in sessions. Once the period is over, the council meets to make its final decision. This is the second consultation after an initial attempt in 2015 was scrapped when Town Hall found mistakes in a key paper. That error forced the council to delay its proposed licensing changes, which called for all new bars to shut by midnight, by 12 months.
The Hackney area is home to plenty of nightclubs, including Dalston Superstore, The Nest, Oslo and the soon-to-close Dance Tunnel. The debate surrounding its nighttime economy returned to the fore when Dance Tunnel said its impending closure was down to "the licensing climate" in the borough. (Hackney Council then issued its own response.)
