  • Chicago's smartbar has announced its roster of 2017 residents. In the new year, smartbar—the setting for our first In Residence events, back in March—will formally welcome to the fold two DJs with plenty of prior experience on the club's decks: DJ Heather, the longtime selector also known as part of the all-woman Superjane collective, and Savile, previously a junior resident, who's released on labels including Stripped & Chewed and Argot. (His recent Share Power EP for Argot drew high marks here on RA.) Hugo Ball, with Justin Long, Sevron, Eris Drew and sold, and Queen!, the weekly Sunday session with Derrick Carter, Michael Serafini and Garrett David, are set to return in 2017, along with Slack, the brainchild of talent buyer Olin. We Still Believe, helmed by RA readers' #10 DJ of 2016 (and smartbar's former talent buyer) The Black Madonna also comes back. Sassmouth (Planet Chicago), Jeff Derringer (Oktave), Chrissy (Sleaze), Honey Soundsystem's Jason Kendig and Phillip Stone round out the group. Guest residencies—Discwoman, Interdimensional Transmissions, As You Like It and Honcho were the ones picked for 2016—are still TBA. To ring in 2017, smartbar will keep to tradition, throwing another New Year's Eve shindig with an all-residents lineup. Heather, Savile, Olin and sold are among those due to DJ at the party, called Interstellar, which will also feature an installation from visual artist Nate Love.
