Coldcut have designed an Ableton Max For Live plug-in.
MidiVolve automatically takes MIDI information, whether it's played live or from a sequence, and develops it into something new. Change can be applied randomly or as defined by the user, which means MidiVolve can subtly alter your sequences or make wholesale alterations.
Its various modes generate variety in different ways. Arp mode creates arpeggios and Riff mode makes melodic patterns, both of which are based on the supplied MIDI content. A button marked Evolve can take these new sequences and change the pitch, velocity, note order, duration, density and other parameters in order to make new musical content. An Auto mode can use customised degrees of probability, range, direction and change on a per-parameter basis to create subtle or extreme changes as the sequence repeats. Users can also define global parameters like scale and sequence length, while Euclidean patterns can be used to inject yet more variation.
MidiVolve also comes with 11 instruments and eight audio effects racks designed to integrate with the MIDI plug-in. The sounds draw from Coldcut's personal library and a range of African instruments. It's available to purchase on the Ableton website.
