Second Yard Botanicals is out on Apollo Records in August.
After some two decades immersed in music, Second Yard Botanicals will be Frick's first solo full-length record, though it only took him about two months to complete. The project involved a wide range of acoustic and electronic sound sources, including live instrumentation (from himself and others) and his own collection of live and field recordings. He put it together at Brandt Brauer Frick's shared studio space in Neukölln, Berlin, with bandmate Jan Brauer handling the mixing.
Apollo says the album is "highly eclectic" genre-wise, as it shows Frick "drawing on the world around him in a free associative style." The artist himself puts it this way: "A word I sometimes had in mind was Alltagspoesie, the poetry of everyday life. The thought that however small and unimportant things and people are, they—or we—all hint towards each other, if not to say towards the whole. The fact that half of the pieces on the record are short miniatures has to do with that. Throwing something in and hearing what it tells."
